For those who think that name brand foods are safe from poison from China, think again:
All this stuff makes me think twice about letting my kids go trick or treating this Halloween. I know that many people giving out candy are going to buy it from stores like Family Dollar, Dollar General, and Wal Mart.
Dollar General had toothpaste (some of it disguised as name brands) with diethylene gylcol (anti freeze) in it…from China. I have SEEN candy made in China in these stores.
But if Cadbury chocolate has poison in it, how do we know Hershey is still made in the USA? Is anything safe?
Dear Senators Obama and McCain:
I’d like to know what you, as President, are going to do about the Chinese Imports That Threaten Our Very Lives.
You know that they’ve poisoned our pets with melamine, some toothpaste has been poisoned with diethylene glycol and snuck here in the United States, and they even poisoned 50,000 of their own babies with melamine. I wrote a very disturbing blog about diethylene glycol myself.
Their food products are sneaking into Canada, and they are also getting into the United States. Carrots. I used to buy carrots to mash up as baby food for my babies. WHERE THE HECK WERE THEY GROWN? Not even fresh fruit and vegetables are safe – who knows what kind of toxic soil China grew their stinking carrots in.
What are you two clowns proposing to do about this? Anything? I’d be very surprised. Seems like American politicians have been in heat to trade with China since before Jimmy Carter.
I WANT ONE OF YOU TO STAND UP AND SAY “HEY, WE WON’T TOLERATE THIS FROM CHINA ANYMORE! NO FOOD PRODUCTS OR INGREDIENTS FOR HUMANS OR PETS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THIS COUNTRY!”
BTW – it’s not just cheapo brands that are risky – check out Cadbury Chocolate!
Was reading a thread about child abuse on a local news station message board. The parents in question had been living in filth for at least the last six years – their home was full of rotted food and feces, and the children were running around wild and filthy as well. The children ranged in age from a year old to six years old.
Side note: I wonder if these people qualify as “child abusers” or just plain “ignormauses.” I don’t know the whole story, but if the parents were living in the squalor and filth right along with the kids I would bet that they had no idea they were “abusing” their kids, they were just stupid. But again, I don’t know the whole story. Maybe they were forcing the kids to live in the poop while they took care of themselves. At any rate, that’s not the point.
Someone made the comment “This is why abortion should be kept legal.” Implying of course that it is better for the child to be aborted from the womb than to grow up in an abusive household.
Really?
How did legal abortion prevent THIS? As far as I know, abortion in PA has been legal for some time. But kids are still being abused.
Do they think that someone is going to say “I’m going to abuse this kid if I have it so I may as well abort it and save it from all that grief.”
Frankly, I think that people who think that clearly and carefully probably won’t ever be in a position to have an unwanted pregnancy to begin with.
I’m so glad that my biological mother didn’t abort my brother and me – our biological father was little more than a sperm donor, a drunken nasty mean man who cared for nobody but himself….a lot of abortion activists would have hailed my mother as a hero, I suppose, had she “exercised freedom of choice.”
But I wouldn’t be here, my brother wouldn’t be here, our kids wouldn’t be here.
None of us has any right to take away someone else’s life – regardless of how noble we think our reasons are.
My friend and I went to the movies last night and saw two films, back to back. Silly, I thought that there would be about 10 minutes to spare in between films, but er….well, film #1, Burn After Reading, which was at the far end of the Cinemark, was over at 7:58. Mamma Mia, which was on the exact opposite end of the theater, started at 8:00.
I stood in line for pop corn, while Cynthia went to buy our Mamma Mia tickets. The popcorn guy was especially sluggish, and Cynthia was having an argument with the kiosk – then she discovered she was swiping her card the wrong way. Tickets and popcorn finally in hand, we dashed as quickly as we could to theater 18 (from theater 2).
Phew! The only preview we missed was something for High School Musical. That’s cool. Claimed our seats, went potty, and sat down prepared (almost) to see Pierce Brosnan sing to Meryl Streep.
We did wish we had allowed some time to process Burn After Reading, though – what a bizarre movie; bizarre on so many levels. Bizarre that I actually liked Brad Pitt’s character – he was very funny, endearing, and lovable, and…bizarre that I despised George Clooney’s character so much that I sat there wanting him to die. Yet, in the midst of a stream of horrible language and marital infidelity I found myself laughing – laughing a LOT. It was very dark, very absurd, and pretty clever. I would NOT recommend it though because I do have a reputation to protect…I don’t think I’ll be adding it to my collection, but it was one of those clandestine little encounters that you don’t want to relive but don’t really regret….and you’ll always look back on it with a bittersweet sense of shame and pleasure all at once.
It was a difficult transition to make, from the dark and dirty streets of DC to the bright, sunny, happy-go-lucky island near Greece where we find Meryl Streep preparing for her daughter’s wedding day. Her daughter discovered that three different and delightful men might be her father (this is so wrong on so many levels but bear with me) and she secretly invited the three of them to the wedding. Mom hasn’t seen these guys since their three separate rolls in the sand together 20 years ago. I thoroughly loved Meryl and Pierce singing “SOS” to one another, as well as Meryl singing “The Winner Takes it All” to Pierce on the beach at sunset – oh my word, what a beautiful scene, and it broke my heart.
This movie was fun, full of dancing and singing and Abba songs….and did I mention it was FUN? I really enjoyed it and also felt a little cheated. I wished that I had taken the plunge when I was 20 to become a bit of a vagabond and tour the world, or at least, get out of Pennsylvania before settling down and having a family.
Since I have no idea really who my father is (my biological father…I know his name, I know he’s dead, and I know he was not in the least bit like Pierce Brosnan) and I never knew my biological mother (though I think she may have been a bit on the wild side like Meryl Streep’s character) I could understand the young Sophie wanting to know her dad.
She was lucky – she got to grow up on an island paradise and get three good looking, well-to-do, and nice men to be her Dad.
I feel cheated a bit because I never knew my father or my real mother, and I feel cheated because I was too chicken to take chances when I was young.
That’s why we have movies – for $8, you can live anywhere you want and be anyone you want to be….even if it’s only for 103 minutes.
I was continuing a discussion online about Obama being President when someone said “We’ve had enough WAR, it’s time for a change…” or something to that effect. The idea was that Republicans are war mongers and Democrats are peace loving dudes.
With my tongue a little in cheek, I posted a simplistic response…World War 2 was entered into under a Democratic President, the Korean Conflict was entered into under a Democratic President (and ended under a Republican), Vietnam was entered into under a Democratic President (and ended under a Republican). I neglected to put the first Gulf War down though I should have but my point was – the Dems have had their fair share of entering wars and Republicans have ended them….I really don’t think party has anything to do with it.
I made a comment about the WTC being attacked under President Clinton’s watch…because as we know, most people want to blame everything that’s wrong today on President Bush.
Another person on the Obama side was frustrated because those of us who were not for Obama were not being “objective” and were “biased” and “ill informed” (see previous blog for my rant on that.) The person said “Please can we stick to serious informed dialogue?” She demanded facts with footnotes…
So I asked her if she denied anything I posted about the Presidents and war ….asked her if she denied that it was under a Dem that the WTC was attacked.
This was ignored because I was being “sarcastic” and “attacking.” (Okay.) Until today.
Someone else said they were disputing my factoid that the WTC was attacked under Clinton; it occurred in 2001, only seven years ago. Well, at least he/she has some math skills.
I guess the February 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center doesn’t count because “only” six people were killed. It doesn’t count because it didn’t succeed in destroying the Towers. It “only” hurt 1,000 people…
No, actually it “didn’t count” because it was forgotten. Or maybe never even known about (Not sure how old this person is….but supposedly everyone on this forum is at least 18…or should be.)
This is sad. The US targets were actually attacked several times under the Presidency of Clinton. It’s very easy to forget what led up to 9/11 and blame G.W. Bush for the entire mess, but it’s not accurate or even fair. Terror attacks have been ongoing for decades.
That there are people out there who don’t remember something as traumatic as the 1993 bombing in New York City scares me….those who don’t remember history are doomed to repeat it – how true it is.
For reasons that are obscure to me now, my husband used to refer to my mom as The Duke. When we went to visit, we were going to The Duke’s. (Upon further investigation, The Man called my mom The Duke because of her past reputation of being rowdy in bars. He is referring to an incident she told us once, many many years ago, about how she was asked to leave The Pines because some lady thought she was flirting with her husband.)
Now, I sit here watching The REAL Duke, Mr. John Wayne, in his final film, The Shootist. And I realize that I’ve been very stupid for years.
I never liked John Wayne, except in two movies – The Sands of Iwo Jima and The Quiet Man. Upon further reflection, and the enlightement that comes with age, I understand why people love The Duke, and I’m sorry to have wasted many years disliking him.
He has a fantastic delivery, and even though most of his characters are the same – crochety, grumpy, surly – they also are rather endearing and likable…even as he’s kicking someone’s butt.
I watched The Man that Shot Liberty Valance specifically for James Stewart – and was hijacked by John Wayne.
Thinking about it further, I realize that the only movie of John Wayne’s that I can’t stand is Rooster Cogburn – and it has nothing to do with The Duke – I can’t stand Kate Hepburn in that movie.
Favorite quote from The Shootist: “I don’t think I ever killed a man that didn’t deserve it.”
If you don’t care for Obama, then you are uninformed & lack objectivity. At least, that’s what I’ve come across online.
You are only respected if you say that Obama (or whoever the current liberal darling is…past darlings no longer count) is absolutely right and exactly what our country needs.
If you point out the shortcomings of previous democrats (in an effort to show that incompetence knows no particular party) you are ridiculed as being an uninformed bumpkin.
By stating that I’m not too keen on the current Poster Child of the DNC, I am “entrenched in deeply rooted biases and prejudices.”
It’s funny – I had just stated that
I would vote for Bill Clinton
(don’t tell my husband I said that) were he able to run for President again – I prefer him over Obama AND McCain. So I don’t have any “deep rooted biases and prejudices” against dems…. Am I biased and prejudiced because I happen to be white, and Obama is not?
(I’ve stated many times that I wish David Palmer, the character on 24 created by Dennis Haysbert, could be our President. I really do not have any race issues at all with Obama.)
I don’t care if he’s black, white, young, old, or purple. I just think he plain stinks as a possible President.
And McCain ain’t much different, in my book.
I just wish people would let me have, and express this opinion, without throwing sand about being biased and ill informed and stupid and what-not. Just grow up, already. It really is okay to disagree nicely.
